Physiotherapy & Rehabilitation

Stroke Rehabilitation

A stroke occurs when the blood supply to the brain is affected, whether there be a leakage or a block. This results in damage to the brain and possible impairment in function. Depending on the area that has been affected, symptoms following a stroke can vary.  They often involve some aspect of paralysis, weakness, coordination issues, poor balance and/or spasticity.

Physiotherapy is an integral component in the road to recovery from a stroke. Research demonstrates early physiotherapy intervention improves long term functional recovery, decreases the number of subsequent events, and improves rates of independent living in as high as 81% of patients.

Benefits of Physiotherapy for Strokes

  • Prevents contractures
  • Improves flexibility
  • Increases strength
  • Improves balance and stability
  • Improves gait/mobility
  • Increases coordination and fine motor control

How Can Donna Sarna Physiotherapy Help?

At Donna Sarna Physiotherapy & Rehabilitation an individulized treatment plan will be developed based on the assessment findings.  Treatment will include myofascial release, stretching exercises, balance and coordination actvitiies, as well as strengthening.   We will work with you to keep active, re-teach or adapt movements and encourage your independence. A secondary benefit of physiotherapy is that we will also help with trying to reduce the risk of further complications, such as skin breakdown, pain and joint stiffness.

When recovering from a stroke it’s important to keep moving, maximize your function and try to regain/maintain your mobility at the best efficiency level you can manage.   Clients do not require a doctor referral, however we work closely with your physician and other care providers.
