A stroke occurs when the blood supply to the brain is affected, whether there be a leakage or a block. This results in damage to the brain and possible impairment in function. Depending on the area that has been affected, symptoms following a stroke can vary. They often involve some aspect of paralysis, weakness, coordination issues, poor balance and/or spasticity.
Physiotherapy is an integral component in the road to recovery from a stroke. Research demonstrates early physiotherapy intervention improves long term functional recovery, decreases the number of subsequent events, and improves rates of independent living in as high as 81% of patients.
